So who are we?
Sensible Housing Co-op was formed in the 1980s by a group of youngish single people who were fed up of having little or no options when it came to housing. They scraped the necessary funds together to register as a co-operative and this meant that they were eligible for government grant to help them purchase or build homes for themselves.
Over time the co-op grew until it had refurbished 16 houses in the Great Lever area of Bolton. We then commissioned a new block of 12 flats aimed primarily at young single people or couples. Our member households include young single people, families with children and retirees.
In 2012 we completed a large stock investment programme which saw all our homes receive upgrades to kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors and heating.
The co-op is run by members for members.
In recent years the co-op has employed a service provider to carry out the day to day business for us such as rent collection and repairs. The service provider is accountable to the co-op’s management committee which has overall responsibility for management and governance of the co-op. The committee is made up entirely of tenant members.
